Hiring Practices of Successful Organizations

Hiring Practices of Successful Organizations

As you are well aware, hiring the wrong candidate decreases productivity, lessens morale and is a huge waste of time, not to mention the money it cost to pursue the wrong candidate, the money it costs to pursue the new candidate and the downtime of employees to train. What a hassle!

Hiring a candidate that’s going to be a perfect fit for your company takes more than just spinning the wheel, picking the best resume; crossing your fingers and hoping thing work out for the best. Hiring goes beyond choosing the candidate who looks the best in a suit – it involves certain practices that every successful human resources department should know and follow.

According to research, a job interview where the candidate is asked to describe specific samples of their work is at the top of the list of effective hiring practices. This behavior-based practice is so successful, more employers will be implementing it in the future.

Automated resume screening and search – a hiring practice that involves an easier process of searching, organizing and finding resumes – is next on the list of effectiveness. Moving forward, more companies will use computer-assisted interviewing to help further streamline the entire process.

Simulations and assessments are next on the list. Many companies haven’t embraced these hiring practices yet, but that’s about to change in the near future.  More companies will begin to use assessments along with simulations to test a potential candidate’s job knowledge, abilities and skills sets along with their motivation level and even their knowledge of the company to see if they are a good fit.

A job analysis shouldn’t be overlooked. When you are ready to fill a position, take the time to perform this step. When performed correctly, a job analysis will provide a list of attributes that are needed to perform the job well. Remember, employee turnover is reduced when the person hired is as close to a perfect fit to the job as possible.

Finally, remember your legal obligations when it comes to using effective hiring practices. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) will be knocking on your door if you overlook a candidate because of race, color, creed or handicap. If you are found guilty of this, the costs involved with the lawsuit, back pay, compensatory damages and more can be astronomical.

Organizations with the best and most effective hiring practices see their return on the recruiting investment when it comes to the bottom line. They rank higher in financial profitability, employee retention and even productivity. The right job candidate makes contributions to your company that will far exceed the cost it took to hire them. The wrong person will cost you plenty. Bottom line: success depends on hiring the right person for the job.
