How to Make Your School Event Memorable

by Jesse Lewis

Students dread most assemblies – they are just more of the same old stuff to many, a motivational message, a musical groups that is pretty good but they do not connect with, or worse a boring speech about topics that just do not connect with them… You know exactly the types of programs I am talking about.

How can you make your next assembly a time for your students to really remember in a great way? One answer is to make it unique, fun and exciting with outstanding forms of entertainment with a message added in.

Many student activities planners are concerned about hiring entertainment for their functions. They worry the material covered by the comedian will not be clean and school friendly, the magician will be pulling quarters from behind students ears and making lame jokes, or the entertainment will be just plain boring.

This perception may be due to previous experiences with unprofessional entertainers or a Horror Story from a colleague. However it is important to keep in mind that the right entertainment can add a tremendous value to your event and make it a fun memorable positive function for your school.

The right entertainment can get your group involved, you can get them laughing and feeling good about your event. Possibly more important, providing entertainment for your guests can also help you relate your message to the group.

When creating a positive school event with entertainment it is important to remember the following:

  1. The entertainment should be student friendly. The performance should be clean and free of inappropriate comments or humor.
  2. Your guests should not be humiliated in any way shape or form. This is becoming more prevalent throughout North America with more restrictions and social issues coming forward.
  3. The Act should have good intent.  Getting your audience laughing together is a wonderful thing but the laughter should not be at the expense of others.
  4. The entertainment you hire should be fun and creative. No one wants to see the same thing they have seen before! You will want to bring your audience something that is new, something to hold their interest.

Keeping these things in mind, you can make your next event a memorable function that not only succeeds in entertaining your audience, but if you decide to it can also support your messages and school objectives. This can be a great return on your investment!
