Skeptics often assume hypnosis only works on people who already believe in it, but during Carnival Season and International Mirth Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says comedy hypnosis works precisely because belief isn’t required.
“Comedy lowers defenses before people even think about hypnosis,” Lewis explains. “By the time skepticism kicks in, attention has already shifted.”
Lewis says hypnosis relies more on participation than belief. In a comedy setting, laughter, curiosity, and group focus naturally draw attention away from analysis and toward experience. That shift allows people to respond without feeling pressured to believe anything.
“Skeptics are usually overthinking,” Lewis says. “Comedy gives their attention something else to do.”
As audiences gather for live entertainment during Carnival Season, Lewis notes that humor creates psychological safety. When people are laughing, they stop monitoring themselves as closely, which reduces resistance and self-consciousness.
“Comedy creates permission,” Lewis explains. “People feel safe trying something because it’s framed as fun.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says skeptics often become the most surprised participants. “They expect to resist,” he says. “Instead, they find themselves responding naturally.”
By understanding how comedy changes attention, Lewis believes skepticism stops being a barrier. “Hypnosis doesn’t require belief,” he says. “It requires engagement.”
