Creativity is often treated as a mysterious talent, but during International Creativity Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says creative states rely on the same mental skills used in trance.
“Creativity and trance both depend on flexible attention,” Lewis explains. “When attention loosens from rigid rules, new connections appear.”
Lewis says hypnosis highlights this overlap clearly. In trance states, the mind becomes less focused on evaluation and more open to exploration. That same shift allows creative ideas to surface without being immediately judged or dismissed.
“When the inner critic quiets, ideas move more freely,” Lewis says. “That’s true for creativity and hypnosis alike.”
As creativity is celebrated this month, Lewis notes that many people block creative thinking by trying to control it too tightly. Excessive self-monitoring interrupts the flow that creativity requires.
“Creativity doesn’t thrive under constant supervision,” Lewis explains. “It needs room to wander.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says performers, artists, and problem-solvers often enter trance-like focus without realizing it. “They’re deeply engaged, time feels different, and attention stays absorbed,” he says. “That’s trance.”
By recognizing the shared mental skills behind creativity and trance, Lewis believes people can approach both with less pressure. “You don’t have to force creativity,” he says. “You have to get out of its way.”
