Why Getting Lost in a Book, Puzzle, or Phone Feels Hypnotic

Many people describe the feeling of getting lost in a book, a puzzle, or even their phone as “zoning out.” During International Brain Teaser Month and Book Blitz Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says that experience feels hypnotic for a reason.

“That absorbed state is essentially the same mental process hypnosis uses,” Lewis explains. “Your attention narrows, outside distractions fade, and time feels different.”

Lewis says hypnosis is often misunderstood because people expect it to feel unusual or dramatic. In reality, most people enter similar focus states every day without realizing it. Reading, solving puzzles, scrolling, or watching a show can all create that same deep engagement.

“When attention locks in, the brain stops checking everything else,” Lewis says. “That’s not unconsciousness. That’s focus.”

Having performed live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada for more than two decades, Lewis notes that the familiarity of this experience is why hypnosis works so reliably. “People aren’t learning a new skill,” he explains. “They’re using one they already have.”

During months that celebrate reading and mental challenges, Lewis believes it’s helpful to recognize how common these states are. “Hypnosis isn’t rare,” he says. “We just don’t usually label it when it happens naturally.”

Understanding this connection, Lewis adds, helps remove fear and confusion. “Once people realize they already experience hypnotic focus, hypnosis stops feeling strange and starts feeling familiar.”
