People often notice that behavior feels different in groups than it does one-on-one, and during Carnival Season, when crowds and shared experiences take center stage, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says group settings naturally amplify suggestion.
“Attention behaves differently in groups,” Lewis explains. “When people are focused together, suggestion travels more easily.”
Lewis says hypnosis highlights this effect clearly. In group settings, individuals unconsciously take cues from those around them. Laughter, posture, reactions, and expectations synchronize, creating a shared attentional rhythm that makes responses feel more natural and less effortful.
“In a group, people stop monitoring themselves as closely,” Lewis says. “That’s not pressure. That’s permission.”
As festivals, performances, and communal events increase during Carnival Season, Lewis notes that group focus reduces self-consciousness. When attention is shared, people feel safer participating because responsibility feels distributed rather than individual.
“Group settings lower resistance,” Lewis explains. “People feel supported instead of singled out.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says this is why hypnosis works so reliably in front of audiences. “The group creates momentum,” he says. “Individuals move with it.”
By understanding how group attention functions, Lewis believes people can better understand everything from crowd behavior to live entertainment. “Suggestion isn’t stronger because people are weaker in groups,” he says. “It’s stronger because attention is aligned.”
