Why Hypnosis Doesn’t Remove Control

One of the most persistent myths surrounding hypnosis is the idea that people lose control while under hypnosis. According to professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis, the opposite is true.

“Hypnosis only works when people are actively involved,” Lewis says. “If someone doesn’t want to do something, hypnosis can’t make them.”

As conversations about behavior, influence, and decision-making continue early in the year, Lewis explains that hypnosis is often misunderstood as surrender rather than cooperation. In reality, participants remain aware of their surroundings and choices throughout the experience.

Lewis describes hypnosis as a focused mental state where distractions fade and attention narrows. “People don’t stop thinking,” he explains. “They stop overanalyzing.”

This misunderstanding, Lewis says, is reinforced by outdated portrayals that frame hypnosis as a loss of agency. “Loss of control makes for good drama,” he notes. “But it’s not how the mind actually works.”

Because hypnosis relies on consent and participation, it cannot override personal values or intentions. “People always retain the ability to stop, speak, or disengage,” Lewis says. “That’s why hypnosis is safe and predictable.”

By clarifying how hypnosis truly functions, Lewis believes the fear surrounding it begins to disappear. “When people realize they’re always in control, hypnosis stops being intimidating and starts making sense.”
