Why Hypnosis Looks Fake But Isn’t

One of the most common reactions people have when watching hypnosis is disbelief. According to professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis, that skepticism is understandable — but misplaced.

“Hypnosis often looks fake because it’s quiet,” Lewis explains. “There’s no dramatic moment where someone ‘goes under.’ What you’re actually seeing is focus, not unconsciousness.”

Lewis says hypnosis is frequently judged by how it appears rather than how it functions. People expect visible signs of trance, when in reality the mental process is internal and subtle.

“Real hypnosis doesn’t look like sleep,” Lewis says. “It looks like someone concentrating.”

With conversations around psychology, attention, and behavior increasing at the start of the year, Lewis notes that hypnosis is often misunderstood because it lacks spectacle. The more ordinary it appears, the easier it is to dismiss.

Lewis explains that stage hypnosis amplifies reactions through group dynamics, humor, and expectation, which can make it seem exaggerated. But the underlying process is the same mental state people experience when they become absorbed in a book, a movie, or a task.

“The irony is that the more normal hypnosis looks, the more people assume it isn’t real,” Lewis says.

By reframing hypnosis as a skill rather than a performance trick, Lewis believes misconceptions begin to dissolve. “Once people understand that hypnosis is participation, not theatrics, it starts to make sense.”
