Seasonal transitions often bring subtle changes in mood and focus, and during International Quality of Life Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says those shifts are closely tied to how attention adapts to changing environments.
“When seasons change, routines change,” Lewis explains. “Attention has to renegotiate where it goes and how it’s used.”
Lewis says hypnosis highlights this process clearly. Hypnosis works by stabilizing attention in one direction, while seasonal transitions temporarily unsettle it. Changes in daylight, schedules, social rhythms, and expectations all pull attention into adjustment mode.
“The mind is recalibrating,” Lewis says. “That takes energy.”
As winter gives way to new routines later in the season, Lewis notes that people often interpret mood shifts as emotional problems rather than attentional ones. In reality, attention is responding to new patterns of light, activity, and stimulation.
“Mood follows attention more than people realize,” Lewis explains. “When attention is unsettled, mood often follows.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says this is why focus and emotional balance can feel uneven during transitions. “Nothing is wrong,” he says. “The system is adapting.”
By understanding how seasonal transitions affect attention and mood, Lewis believes people can respond with more patience and awareness. “Transitions are temporary,” he says. “Attention will settle again.”
