Why Winter Encourages Trance-Like States

Winter often changes how people think, feel, and focus, and during National Be On-Purpose Month and the heart of winter, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says colder seasons naturally encourage trance-like mental states.

“Winter reduces stimulation,” Lewis explains. “Less daylight, quieter schedules, and more time indoors all narrow attention.”

Lewis says hypnosis relies on similar conditions. When external input decreases, attention turns inward more easily. That inward focus can feel like daydreaming, zoning out, or drifting, but it’s actually a normal response to a slower environment.

“Trance isn’t something exotic,” Lewis says. “It’s what happens when the outside world gets quieter.”

As winter routines settle in, Lewis notes that people often misinterpret these states as low energy or lack of motivation. In reality, the mind is adapting to reduced stimulation and conserving attention.

“Winter invites reflection,” Lewis explains. “The mind naturally shifts inward.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says many people experience deeper focus or imagination during winter without realizing why. “When distractions drop, attention has space to wander and settle,” he says.

By understanding why winter encourages trance-like states, Lewis believes people can work with the season instead of fighting it. “Winter isn’t a productivity failure,” he says. “It’s a different attentional mode.”
