Hypnosis is often framed as something mysterious or magical rather than a psychological process. As World Hypnotism Day draws attention to how hypnosis is portrayed and discussed, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says that framing is one of the main reasons the public misunderstands it.
“Magic is what people reach for when something isn’t explained clearly,” Lewis explains. “Hypnosis isn’t supernatural. It’s a mental skill based on attention, expectation, and cooperation.”
Lewis says decades of exaggerated portrayals in movies, television, and stage acts have trained audiences to expect hypnosis to involve hidden powers or loss of control. In reality, the process is far more ordinary and far more predictable.
“When people don’t understand how something works, they assume there must be something special behind it,” Lewis says. “With hypnosis, that assumption gets labeled as magic.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis notes that real hypnosis looks nothing like a spell being cast. Participants are awake, aware, and responsive, even while deeply focused.
“Nothing mystical is happening,” Lewis explains. “It’s the same mental process people use when they become absorbed in a conversation, a task, or a performance.”
Lewis believes that World Hypnotism Day offers an opportunity to shift how hypnosis is discussed. “When hypnosis is explained as psychology instead of mystery, people stop being afraid of it,” he says. “It becomes something understandable instead of something imagined.”
