Why Hypnosis Is Better Explained Than Demonstrated

Hypnosis is often demonstrated before it is explained, which can leave audiences confused about what they’re actually seeing. During World Hypnotism Day, when hypnosis tends to get more public attention, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says explanation matters more than performance.

“Demonstrations show outcomes, not processes,” Lewis explains. “If people don’t understand what’s happening internally, they fill in the gaps with assumptions.”

Lewis says demonstrations, especially in entertainment settings, can unintentionally reinforce myths about hypnosis. Without context, audiences may assume hypnosis involves mind control, hidden tricks, or loss of awareness.

“When you only show the result, people guess at the cause,” Lewis says. “That’s how misinformation spreads.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis notes that explanation removes fear far more effectively than spectacle. When people understand that hypnosis relies on focus, expectation, and voluntary participation, the experience becomes easier to understand and easier to trust.

“Hypnosis doesn’t need to be dramatic to be effective,” Lewis explains. “It needs to be clear.”

Lewis believes World Hypnotism Day creates a natural moment for education rather than performance. “When hypnosis is explained first, people stop worrying about what might happen to them,” he says. “They realize it’s a normal mental process, not a mystery.”
