Why Focus Feels Harder Than Ever

Many people say they feel more distracted than they used to, even when trying to concentrate. During International Quality of Life Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says that feeling isn’t imagined — it’s a result of how modern environments compete for attention.

“Focus didn’t suddenly get weaker,” Lewis explains. “The number of things demanding attention exploded.”

Lewis says hypnosis highlights this shift clearly. Hypnosis works by reducing competing inputs and narrowing attention. In everyday life, the opposite is happening: notifications, multitasking, and constant information streams pull attention in multiple directions at once.

“The brain was never designed to monitor everything simultaneously,” Lewis says. “It works best when attention has a single direction.”

As conversations around quality of life increase in January, Lewis notes that many people mistake distraction for a personal failing. In reality, focus is being challenged by design. Digital platforms, work expectations, and social habits all reward divided attention.

“People think they’ve lost the ability to focus,” Lewis explains. “What they’ve really lost is space.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says this is why hypnosis can feel refreshing. “It’s one of the few situations where attention is allowed to settle,” he says. “Nothing else is competing.”

By understanding why focus feels harder today, Lewis believes people become less self-critical and more curious about how attention actually works. “Focus isn’t gone,” he says. “It’s just crowded.”
