Scrolling, swiping, and jumping between apps can feel mindless, but during Clean Out Your Inbox Week and International Quality of Life Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says digital distraction mimics trance states more closely than most people realize.
“When attention narrows without intention, it can feel like you’ve lost track of time,” Lewis explains. “That’s a trance-like effect, even if it’s not a healthy one.”
Lewis says hypnosis involves guided focus with a clear direction, while digital distraction pulls attention reactively. Both reduce awareness of surroundings, but the difference lies in control. Hypnosis guides attention on purpose. Digital platforms capture it automatically.
“Trance isn’t about relaxation,” Lewis says. “It’s about where attention goes and how long it stays there.”
As people try to reduce digital overload this month, Lewis notes that constant switching trains the mind to stay shallow rather than sustained. Notifications and feeds keep attention moving just enough to prevent depth, which can feel mentally exhausting.
“People think they’re resting their brain,” Lewis explains. “But constant micro-focus is draining.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says this is why intentional focus feels different from distraction. “When attention is guided,” he says, “people feel clearer instead of scattered.”
By recognizing how digital habits shape attention, Lewis believes people can make more deliberate choices. “Trance itself isn’t the problem,” he says. “Unconscious attention is.”
