New Year’s resolutions are often made with enthusiasm, but during International New Year’s Resolutions Month for Businesses and Healthy Weight Week, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says most resolutions fail for predictable psychological reasons.
“Resolutions are usually built on intention, not structure,” Lewis explains. “Good intentions don’t survive friction.”
Lewis says hypnosis highlights why this happens. Hypnosis works by narrowing attention and reducing competing choices, while most resolutions add new demands on top of already busy lives. Without changes to environment or routine, old patterns quickly reclaim attention.
“People try to layer new behavior onto old systems,” Lewis says. “The system always wins.”
As January progresses, Lewis notes that motivation naturally declines while daily pressures return. This isn’t a lack of character, he explains, but a normal response to cognitive overload and habit inertia.
“The brain defaults to what’s familiar,” Lewis says. “That’s efficiency, not failure.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says sustainable change comes from simplifying decisions, not multiplying them. When attention and behavior are guided consistently, change feels easier rather than forced.
“Resolutions fail quietly because nothing in the day-to-day actually changes,” Lewis explains. “Awareness alone isn’t enough.”
By reframing resolutions as systems rather than promises, Lewis believes people can understand why change attempts stall each year. “Lasting change doesn’t come from trying harder,” he says. “It comes from changing the conditions.”
