Why Fresh Starts Feel Powerful but Fade

The idea of a fresh start carries a strong emotional pull, especially in January, but during International New Year’s Resolutions Month and Get A Balanced Life Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says that feeling is designed to be temporary.

“Fresh starts create a surge of attention,” Lewis explains. “They feel powerful because they momentarily interrupt old patterns.”

Lewis says hypnosis highlights why that surge fades. Hypnosis works by sustaining focused attention over time, while fresh-start motivation is usually tied to a moment or a date. Once everyday routines return, attention drifts back to familiar habits.

“A new calendar doesn’t change how the brain operates,” Lewis says. “Patterns reassert themselves unless something in the system changes.”

As people reset goals early in the year, Lewis notes that many mistake the emotional lift of a fresh start for lasting momentum. When the initial excitement fades, it’s often interpreted as failure rather than a predictable shift in attention.

“The feeling wears off because it was never meant to last,” Lewis explains. “It’s a spark, not a fuel source.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says lasting change depends on what happens after the fresh start moment passes. “Attention needs somewhere to go once the novelty is gone,” he says.

By understanding why fresh starts feel powerful but fade, Lewis believes people can use them more effectively. “A fresh start can open the door,” he says. “But habits are what walk through it.”
