Why Introverts Are Often Better at Focus Than Extroverts

Introversion is often misunderstood as shyness or lack of confidence, but during World Introvert Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says introverts frequently have a natural advantage when it comes to focus.

“Introverts tend to process information internally,” Lewis explains. “That internal orientation makes sustained attention easier.”

Lewis says hypnosis relies heavily on the ability to narrow attention and stay engaged with internal experience, which aligns closely with how many introverts naturally operate. While extroverts often draw energy from external stimulation, introverts are typically more comfortable directing attention inward.

“Focus improves when there’s less need for external input,” Lewis says. “Introverts are often already practicing that skill.”

As conversations around personality styles increase this month, Lewis notes that focus is frequently mistaken for confidence or outward energy. In reality, deep concentration has little to do with how expressive someone is.

“Being quiet doesn’t mean being disengaged,” Lewis explains. “Often it means the opposite.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says some of the most responsive hypnosis participants are introverts. “They’re used to staying with their thoughts,” he says. “That makes focused states easier to enter.”

By reframing introversion as a strength rather than a limitation, Lewis believes people can better understand both focus and personality. “Introversion isn’t a disadvantage,” he says. “It’s a different attentional style.”
