Why Identity Feels Fixed but Isn’t

Many people believe their personality, habits, and reactions are fixed traits, but during International Change Your Stars Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says identity is far more flexible than it appears.

“Identity feels stable because patterns repeat,” Lewis explains. “But repetition isn’t the same as permanence.”

Lewis says hypnosis makes this distinction visible. Hypnosis works by temporarily loosening automatic responses, allowing people to experience thoughts and behaviors outside their usual identity framework. When attention shifts, different responses become available.

“People don’t suddenly become someone else,” Lewis says. “They step outside their usual patterns long enough to see alternatives.”

As conversations around change and self-improvement increase this month, Lewis notes that many people assume difficulty changing means something is wrong with them. In reality, the brain protects familiar patterns because they feel efficient and safe.

“The mind defaults to what it knows,” Lewis explains. “That can look like a fixed identity, even when it isn’t.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says moments of focused attention often reveal unexpected flexibility. “When attention changes, behavior can change,” he says. “That surprises people.”

By understanding identity as a set of patterns rather than a permanent label, Lewis believes people can approach change with less resistance. “You’re not broken,” he says. “You’re practiced.”
