Cultural myths often survive long after they’ve been disproven, and during World Logic Day and Idiom Week, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says that persistence has less to do with facts and more to do with how attention and repetition work.
“Myths stick because they’re familiar,” Lewis explains. “Familiar ideas feel true, even when they aren’t.”
Lewis says hypnosis highlights this effect clearly. Repeated suggestions shape expectations over time, especially when they’re simple, memorable, or emotionally charged. Once an idea becomes part of a shared story, logic alone rarely dislodges it.
“Repetition builds credibility,” Lewis says. “Not accuracy.”
As conversations about reasoning and logic surface this month, Lewis notes that people often assume incorrect beliefs disappear once better information appears. In reality, the brain prefers continuity. Challenging a myth requires effort, while accepting a familiar idea feels efficient.
“Changing a belief means changing where attention goes,” Lewis explains. “Most myths survive because they’re easy to recall.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says this is why misconceptions about hypnosis persist despite widespread explanations. “People repeat what they’ve heard,” he says. “Those repetitions become the story.”
By understanding why cultural myths endure, Lewis believes people can approach misinformation with more patience. “Correction isn’t about arguing,” he says. “It’s about offering a better story that attention can settle into.”
