Routine often feels dull or restrictive, but during Get Organized Month and National Be On-Purpose Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says routine is the most powerful driver of behavior people overlook.
“Routine decides what happens before motivation ever shows up,” Lewis explains. “What you do repeatedly shapes what feels normal.”
Lewis says hypnosis makes this clear by working with existing routines rather than fighting them. Hypnosis doesn’t rely on bursts of effort. Instead, it aligns attention with familiar sequences, making desired behavior feel automatic instead of forced.
“Behavior follows what’s repeated,” Lewis says. “Not what’s promised.”
As people reorganize schedules and habits early in the year, Lewis notes that many try to change outcomes without changing routines. When the structure of the day stays the same, behavior tends to return to familiar patterns.
“You can want something different,” Lewis explains. “But if the routine stays intact, the behavior usually does too.”
Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says the most reliable changes come from small adjustments to daily patterns. “Routine doesn’t need to be dramatic,” he says. “It just needs to be consistent.”
By understanding routine as the hidden driver of behavior, Lewis believes people can approach change with less frustration. “When routine changes,” he says, “behavior follows quietly.”
