Authority is commonly portrayed as the reward for competence or experience. In practice, groups extend authority provisionally. They look for cues that suggest someone can hold responsibility without creating uncertainty. Tone, pacing, emotional regulation, and consistency all communicate whether authority feels safe to lend, even in the absence of credentials.
“Authority begins as a loan, not a title.” This explains why some people are deferred to almost immediately while others struggle to gain influence despite expertise. Groups are not testing knowledge first. They are testing whether alignment with that person will reduce friction or increase it.
