Why Curiosity Is the Gateway to Focus

People often assume focus comes from effort or discipline, but during International Brain Teaser Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says curiosity plays a much larger role than most people realize.

“Curiosity naturally pulls attention forward,” Lewis explains. “When someone is curious, focus happens automatically. You don’t have to force it.”

Lewis says hypnosis relies on the same mechanism. Instead of pushing people to concentrate harder, hypnosis guides attention by engaging interest and expectation. When curiosity is present, distractions fade without resistance.

“The brain follows what it finds interesting,” Lewis says. “That’s why puzzles, questions, and mysteries hold attention so effectively.”

As logic puzzles and brain teasers are highlighted this month, Lewis notes that curiosity-driven focus is something people experience daily. Whether someone is trying to solve a problem, learn something new, or anticipate an outcome, curiosity keeps attention anchored.

“Focus isn’t about tension,” Lewis explains. “It’s about direction.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says this is why hypnosis feels effortless when it works well. “People aren’t being pushed,” he says. “They’re being led by their own interest.”

By understanding curiosity as the entry point to focus, Lewis believes people can better understand both hypnosis and attention itself. “When curiosity leads, focus follows,” he says.
