Why Humor Improves Attention at Work

Humor is often treated as a distraction in professional settings, but during Employee Spirit Month and International Mirth Month, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says humor can actually sharpen attention rather than reduce it.

“Humor resets attention,” Lewis explains. “It gives the brain a break from tension and brings focus back online.”

Lewis says hypnosis uses a similar principle. When attention becomes rigid or overloaded, responsiveness drops. Humor interrupts that rigidity by shifting perspective, which makes it easier for attention to re-engage.

“People focus better when they aren’t bracing themselves,” Lewis says. “Humor lowers that mental tension.”

As organizations focus on morale and engagement this month, Lewis notes that workplaces often underestimate how attention responds to emotional tone. Environments that allow brief moments of levity tend to see better concentration, not worse.

“When people feel relaxed, attention flows,” Lewis explains. “Stress narrows attention in unhelpful ways.”

Having spent more than two decades performing live comedy hypnosis shows across Canada, Lewis says humor works because it creates psychological safety. “When people feel safe, they stop guarding their attention,” he says. “That’s when real focus returns.”

By understanding humor as an attentional tool rather than a distraction, Lewis believes workplaces can rethink productivity. “Attention doesn’t thrive under pressure alone,” he says. “It thrives when people can breathe.”
