People often focus on cleaning their desks, homes, or inboxes at the start of the year, but during Get Organized Month and Clean Out Your Inbox Week, professional hypnotist Jesse Lewis says mental clutter is far more disruptive than physical mess.
“Physical clutter is visible,” Lewis explains. “Mental clutter is invisible, and that’s why it’s harder to deal with.”
Lewis says mental clutter comes from unfinished thoughts, constant notifications, and competing priorities that stay active in the background. Even when someone sits down to focus, those unresolved items continue pulling attention away.
“You can clean a room in an afternoon,” Lewis says. “Clearing mental clutter takes awareness.”
Hypnosis highlights this difference clearly. By narrowing attention and temporarily setting aside competing thoughts, hypnosis allows people to experience what it feels like when mental noise quiets. That contrast makes the impact of mental clutter obvious.
“When the mind isn’t juggling everything at once, focus feels lighter,” Lewis explains. “People don’t realize how heavy that mental load has been until it’s gone.”
As organization and productivity are emphasized this month, Lewis notes that many people address the external symptoms without touching the internal cause. Lists, apps, and systems help, but they don’t automatically reduce mental noise.
“Mental clutter isn’t about having too much to do,” Lewis says. “It’s about having too much competing for attention at the same time.”
By recognizing mental clutter as a distinct issue, Lewis believes people can approach focus more realistically. “Once attention has room to breathe,” he says, “everything else becomes easier.”
